Eva Can't/Gravatum/My Kingdom Music/2017 CD Review

  Eva  Can't  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  a  musical  style  they  refer  to  as  'dramatic  metal' and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Gravatum"  which  will  be released  in  July  by  My  Kingdom Music.

  Atmospheric sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  and  after  awhile  acoustic  guitars  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  they  also  give  the  songs  a  more  progressive  and  folk  music  feeling  as  well  as  mixing  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  along  with  the  vocals  also  mixing  in  a  decent  amount  of  clean  singing  and  the  slow  riffs  also  mix  in  a  decent  amount  of  doom  metal  influences.

  When  grim  screams are  utilized  they  add  in  touches  of  black  and  death  metal  while  the  fast  sections  when  they  are  used  briefly  add  in  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  some  tracks  also  add  in  stringed  instruments  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  ate  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  whispered  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly. 

  On  this  recording  Eva  Can't  moves  away  from  the  melodic  and  technical  style  of  death  metal  from  previous  releases  going  for  a  style  that  mixes  progressive  metal  with  folk  music  while  adding  a  touch  of  their  previous  style,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the lyrics  cover  dark  and  poetic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Eva  Can't  are  a  very  great  sounding dramatic  metal  band  and  if  you  are  looking for something  very  different  and  original,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Apostasia  Della  Rovina"  and  "Gravatum".  8  out  of  10. 

Eaten/Self Titled/Give Praise Records/2017 LP Review

  Eaten  are  a  band  from  Worcester,  Massachusetts  that  plays  a  mixture  of  doom,  death  metal  and  grindcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2017  album  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Give  Praise  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  brutal  grindcore  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  death  metal  growls  as  well  as  the  music  incorporating  a  great  amount  of  power  violence  elements  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  short  in  length  while  you  can  still  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  short  in  length  while  the  slow  riffs  are  very  heavily  influenced  by  doom  metal  and  the songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  some  of  the  riffs  also  utilize  a  small  mount  of  melody  and  melodic  guitar  leads  are  also used  briefly  and  the  fast  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  the  music  always  remains  very  heavy  and  brutal.

  Eaten  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  grindcore  and  power  violence  and  mixes  it  with  death  and  doom  metal  to  create  a sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  violent  and  hateful  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Eaten  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  doom,  death  metal,  power  violence  and  grindcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Bloodline"  "Dispute"  "Blindfold"  and  "Universal  Plague".  8  out  of  10. 

Hybreed Chaos/Entombed In Dark Matter/PRC Music/2017 CD Review

  Hybreed  Chaos  are  a  band  from  Quebec,  Canada  that  plays  a  brutal  form  of  death  metal  with  some  experimental  and  doom  metal  touches  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Entombed  In  Dark  Matter"  which  was  released  by PRC  Music.

  Heavy  dark  yet  heavy  guitar  riffing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  decent  amount  of  melodies  and  the  slow  riffing  is  very  heavily  influenced  by  doom  metal  and  after  awhile  deep  death  metal  growls  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  At  times  the  music  can  get  very  technical  and  when  the  songs  go  into  a  faster  direction  a  great  amount  of  brutal  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  grim  screams  are  also  utilized  at  times  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  one  track also  brings  in  spoken  word  samples.

  Hybreed  Chaos  plays  a  style  of  death  metal  that  is  very  technical  and  brutal  while  also  mixing  in  elements  of  experimental  and  doom  metal  to  create  something  original,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  scientific  and  philosophical  themes  along  with  the  last  track  being  written  in  Frnech.

  In  my  opinion  Hybreed  Chaos  are  a  very  great  sounding  brutal  and  technical  death  metal  with  touches  of  experimental  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Into  The  Heart  Of  The  Swarm"  "Cognitive  Dissonance"  "Soliptic  Confinement"  and  "Etre  ou  le  Neant".  8  out  of  10. 

Evadne/A Mother Named Death/Solitude Productions/2017 CD Review

  Evadne  are  a  band  from  Spain  that  plays  a  melodic  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "A  Mother  Named  Death"  which  was  released by  Solitude  Productions.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  yet  melodic  doom  metal  riffing  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  atmospheric  synths  and  after  awhile  death  metal  growls  and  grim  screams  start  to  make  their  presence  known  along  with  a  touch  of  black  metal.

  Clean  vocals  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  fashion  while  whispers  and  acoustic  guitars  are  also  utilized  at times  along  with  most  of  the tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  one  track  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  female  vocals  and  there  is  also  a  brief  instrumental  before  closing  the  album  with  2  vocal  tracks  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sound  very  powerful  and  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  Evadne  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  a  very  atmospheric  and  melodic  style  of  doom  metal  and  mixes  it  in  with  the  heaviness  of  death  metal  and  a  touch  of  black  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  sadness,  love,  desperation,  and  darkness  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Evadne  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Scars  That  Bleed  Again"  "Colossal"  and  "The  Mourn  Of  The  Oceans".  8  out  of  10. 

Nucleus/Macabra/Fragmented Self/Morbid Visions Music/2017 Split CD Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Illinois's  Nucleus  and  International  band  Macabra  called  "Fragmented  Self"  which  was  released  by  Morbid  Visions  Music  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Nucleus  that  plays  a  sci-fi  orientated  from  of  death  metal  with  a  touch  of  doom.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy  and  90's  influenced  sound  along  with  some  melodic  yet  technical  riffing  and  after  awhile  deep  death  metal  growls  start  to  make  their  presence  known  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard.


  Throughout  their  side  of  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  slow  riffs  add  in  elements  of  doom  metal  and  clean  vocals  are  also  used  briefly  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet melodic  fashion  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  most  of their  tracks  are  long  and  epic  in  length,  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  science  fiction  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Nucleus  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Fragment.

  Next  up  is  Macabra  which  takes  their  old  school  death  metal  style  and  mixes  in  elements  of  doom.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  slow  riffs  and  melodic  guitar  leads  that  are  very  heavily  influenced  by  doom  metal  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  and  atmospheric  synths  are  also  used  briefly  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  Most  of  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording  along  with  a  decent  amount  of  high  pitched  screams  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done in  a  very  technical  fashion  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and fast  parts  and  the  riffs  also  mix  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody,  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  and  insanity  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording f rom  Macabra  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  death  and  doom  metal,  you  should c heck  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Breath  Thief".


  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  doom  and  death  metal.  8  out  of  10.

   

Gravewards Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
1.The idea of the band finally materialised in December 2015 and from that point on , we are giving shape to our ideas and visions via the medium of the death metal music.
The band consists of me (Nikos) on Guitars and vocals , Fotis on bass and Vasilis on drums.
The first release is the ''Subconscious Lobotomy '' ep , recorded in late 2016 and mastered in January 2017 which contains four tracks  and approximately 22 min. of running time.
In mid April a limited to 300 units tape version of it came. More releases will follow...

2.How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
2.Death metal blended with aggressive tech.thrash here and there.
The craft of writing our songs will follow the same path , constantly evolving but never crossing the borders of death/thrash sound.
We do not wish to experiment with our sound and attitude at all.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
3.Horror,anguish,torture inspired by both the cinematic and literary world.
Actually the source is limitless since our everyday life can easily provide themes if you look at it from a different perspective...Needless to mention our own human psyche.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Gravewards'?
4.The final destination of us all...the point that we face the eternal fear...the fear of the unknown.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
5.There has been no live activity as of yet...We prefer timeless rehearsals.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
6.For the time being no.

7.The recording was released on 'Necronome Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
7.Just a friend that loves our sound handling a mailorder catalogue..Simple things...
He kept 100 tapes to spread here in Greece and we ended up taking the rest.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme metal?
8.Just great!
We thank them all for their support...Maniacs from all over the planet gathered like zombies to a feast of fresh meat!!!
Very few tapes are left as we speak...It  is very important to see people still  respecting the fact that Metal without physical copies...is just a myth.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
9.The next step is our first full length titled ''Eternalize the Horror''.
We will enter the studio soon for the rec.process.
Generally speaking , always working on new material...

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
10.As i type my reply to you i am listening to Disincarnate-''dreams of the carrion kind''
Concerning influences...well from possessed,sadus and slayer to death,bolt thrower,obituary and all in between... i do not go to over technical,slam you name it... or anything like that.I do listen to some grind and crust acts as well.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
11.Books full of horror-gory related themes, equally horrific movies, collecting old books. board games (warhammer),documentaries about old and underground painters/artists.. but always addicted to collecting vinyl records.. although the last is music related so skip it if you want to.

  Gravewards  are  a  band  from  Greece that  plays  a  mixture  of  old school death,  doom,  and  technical  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017 ep  "Subconscious  Lobotomy"  which  was  released  by  Necronome  Productions.

  Heavy  riffs  and  melodic  guitar  leads  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  a  few  seconds  later  that  are  more  close  to  the  mid  80's  era  of  the  genre  and  the riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding  very  powerful  and  elements  of  thrash  are  added  into  the  riffing.

  You  can  hear  a  decent  amount  of  doom  metal  elements  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  while  screams  are  also  used  at  times  and  both  the  riffs  and  leads  also  get  very  complex  and  technical  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  tracks  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.
