Dead Sun/Soil's Kingdom/Iron, Blood & Death Corporation/2018 CD Review

  Dead  Sun  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  an  old  school  and  melodic  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Soil's  Kingdom"  which  was  released  by  Iron,  Blood  &  Death  Corporation.

  A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  leads  while t he  vocals  are  mostly  death  metal  growls  as  well  as  the  music  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  90's  era  Swedish  influences  and  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  are  heavily  rooted  in  doom  metal.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  while  screams  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  guitars  are  added  onto  the  recording.

  Dead  Sun  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  melodic  death  metal  and  mixes  it  with  doom  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Dead  Sun  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Sufferer"  "The  Lure  Of  Sunken  Cities"  "66sick"  and  "Martyr".  8  out  of  10.

  

Burial Invocation/Abiogenesis/Dark Descent Records/2018 CD Review

  Burial  Invocation  are  a  band  from  Turkey  that  has  had  an  album  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  old  school  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Abiogenesis"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  Dark  Descent  Records.

  A very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  deep  death  metal   growls  and  the  slow  sections  of  the  songs  are  heavily  rooted  in  doom  metal.

  A  great  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  solos  and  leads  bring  in  a  very  melodic  yet  old  school  style  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  early  90's  era  as  well  as  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  and  they  close  the  album  with  an  acoustic  instruemntal.

  Burial  Invocation  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  their  old  school  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  horror,  undead  and  occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Burial  Invocation  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  doom  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Revival"  and  "Phantasmagoric  Transcendence".  8  out  of  10.

Tunjum/Deidades del inframundo/Dunkelheit Produktionen/2018 CD Review

  Tunjum  are  a  band  from  Peru  that  plays  an  old  school  and  pagan  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Deidades  del  inframundo"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  Dunkelheit  Produktionen.

  Ritualistic  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  musical  direction  which  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  some  of  the  riffing  utilizes  dark  sounding  melodies  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  deep  death  metal  growls  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Most  of  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  doom  metal  elements  along  with  the  tracks  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  when  guitar  leads  ar e utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  and  melodic  style.

  Tunjum  plays  a  musical  style  that  goes  back  to  the  early  90's  era  of  doom/death  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Spanish  and  cover  Occultism  and  Moche  mythology  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Tunjum  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "La  Venganza  De  La  Bestia"  "La  Maldicion  De  La  Bruja"  and  "Retomo  Al  Origen".  8  out  of  10.

 

  

Atavisma/The Chthonic Rituals/Memento Mori/2018 CD Review

  Atavisma  are  a  band  from  France  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  old  school  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "The  Chthonic  Rituals"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  Memento  Mori.

  A  very  dark  sounding  drum  intro  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  along  with  the  riffs  also  utilizing  dark  sounding  melodies  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era.

  Vocals  are  mostly  deep  death  metal  growls  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  are  very  heavily  influenced  by  doom  metal  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Atavisma  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  their  old  school  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  relationship  between  man  and  nature,  ancient  cultures  and  spirituality  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Atavisma  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  doom/death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Sacrifice  Unto  Babylon"  "Monoliths"  and  "A  Subterranean  Life".  8/5 out  of  10.

The Sullen Route/Last Day In Utter Diseases/Grimm Distribution/2018 CD Re-Issue Review

  The  Sullen  Route  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  plays  a  melodic  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Last  Day  In  Utter  Diseases"  which  was  re-issued  in 2018  by  Grimm  Distribution.

  A  very  slow,  dark  and  heavy  doom  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  synths while  programmed  beats  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well a s  the  music  focusing  more  on  the  heavier  side  after  the  intro  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Vocals  are  mostly  death  metal  growls  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  as  well  as  clear  and  shouting  vocals  being  used  at  times,  spoken  word  parts  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  female  vocals,  acoustic  guitars  and  stringed  instruments  can  also  be  heard  and  the  last  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in length.

  The  Sullen  Route  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  atmospheric  doom  metal  and  mixes  it  with  melodic  death  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  loss  of  hope  and  self  harm  themes.

  In  my  opinion  The  Sullen  Route  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic  mixture  of  doom  ad  death  metal and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Bonesacs"  "Dead  Horizon"  and  "Lead  Undone".  8  out  of  10.

Sulaco/The Prize/Translation Loss Records/2018 CD Review

  Sulaco  are  a  band  from  Rochester,  New  York  that  plays  a  mixture  of  death,  doom  metal,  grind,  hardcore,  progressive  and  noise  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "The  Prize"  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  Translation  Loss  Records.

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  progressive  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  using  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  along  with  some  shouting  hardcore  style  hardcore  and  the  music  also  incorporates  a  great  amount  of  noise  rock  elements.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times,  a  great  amount  of  grindcore  elements  can  be  heard  in  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  as  well  as  the  slow  riffs  being  very  heavily  influenced  by  doom  metal.

  Sulaco  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  death,  doom  metal,  grind,  hardcore,  noise  and  progressive  rock  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  angry  and  philosophical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Sulaco  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  death,  doom  metal,  grind,  hardcore  progressive  and  noise  rock  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Bridge"  and  "So  Be  It".  8  out  of  10.

  Cavurn  are  a  band  from  Bellingham,  Washington  that  plays  an  old  school  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  rehearsal  demo  which  was  released  on  cassette  as  a  joint  effort  between  Blood  Harvest  Records  and  Helter  Skelter  Productions.

  Guitar  amp  noises  start  off  the  demo  before  going  into  a  very  slow,  dark  and  heavy  doom  metal  direction  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  deep  death metal growls  along  with  a  few  screams  as  well  as  the  music  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  early  90's  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Cavurn  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "II".  8  out  of  10.
