This is a review of a split ep between San Jose, California's Scolex and Oakland, California's Mortuous which will be released on Halloween by Carbonized Records and we will start off the review with Scolex a band that plays a mixture of punk and doom/death metal.
Their side of the split starts out with a very dark and heavy doom metal influenced sound while the riffs also bring in a great amount of dark sounding melodies along with the vocals being mostly deep death metal growls as well as the faster sections of the song bringing in blast beats and crust punk elements and when gutiar solos and elads are utilized they bring in even more of a 90's style, the production sounds very old school while the lyrics cover horror fiction themes.
In my opinion Scolex are a very great sounding punk influenced doom/death metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out their side off the split.
Next up is Mortuous returning with their mixture of doom and death metal.
Their side of the split starts out with a very dark and heavy sound that is very heavily rooted in the 90's while all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them along with the vocals being mostly deep death metal growls as well as the slower sections of the song bringing in elements of doom metal and when guitar leads are utilized they are done in a very dark and melodic style and when the music speeds up blast beats can be heard, the production sounds very old school while the lyrics cover futility, existence, technology and death metal.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Mortuous and if you are a fan of doom/death metal, you should check out their side of the split.
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and I would recommend it to all fans of old school doom/death metal. 8 out of 10.
