Ilsa are a band from Washington D.C that has been featured before in this zine and plays a mixture of death, doom metal and crust and this is a review of their 2015 album "The Felon's Claw" which was released by A389 Recordings.
Death metal growls and sludge/doom metal style guitar riffing starts off the album and a few seconds later the music speeds up a bit and adds in elements of crust and d beat along with high pitched screams making their present known at times and when solos and leads are utilized they are very raw and melodic sounding.
All of the musical instruments on the album have a very powerful sound to them and some of the albums add melodies into the guitar riffing and some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length and as the album progresses blast beats can be heard in the faster parts of the music which also brings in a touch of grindcore.
Ilsa creates another album that is very heavy keeping their sludge and doom metal influences while also adding into more crust and old school death metal elements this time around, the production sounds very dark and heavy while the lyrics cover darkness and occultism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Ilsa and if you are a fan of this band, you should enjoy this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "25 Cromwell" "Pandolpho" "Enter The Void" and "Song Of The Saw-Blade". 8 out of 10.
