California's Vastum have returned with a new album that continues the old school doom/death metal sound of previous recordings and this is a review of their 2015 album "Hole below" which was released by Sentinent Ruin Laboratories".
Dark sound effects start off the album giving the music more of a ritualistic and avant garde feeling as well as bringing in spoken word parts which slowly leads to the guitars kicking in and they takes the recording into more of a heavy doom/death metal direction along with some growling vocals.
When t he music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard and the music is very heavily rooted in the early 90's and the riffs also bring in morbid sounding melodies at times while the solos and leads also remain true to an old school style of death metal while some of the vocals utilize high pitched screams.
Throughout the recording there is a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with acoustic guitars being added into certain sections of the recording and a couple of the tracks are very long and epic in length and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them.
Vastum continues the old school doom/death metal tradition of previous recordings and creates an album that is very heavy and faithful to the early 90's style, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover abjection, erotism, and death themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Vastum and if you are a fan of this band, you should enjoy this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Sodomitic Malevolence" and "Hole below". 8 out of 10.
