Germany's The Ocean have returned with a new recording which continues the progressive and atmospheric mixture of sludge metal and post hardcore from previous releases and this is a review of their 2018 album "Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic" which was released by Metal Blade Records.
An ambient orientated intro starts off the album while also introducing keyboards onto the recording before going into more of a heavier and atmospheric musical direction along with some of the tracks being very long and epic in length as well as the riffs also adding in a great amount of melody.
Elements of sludge metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the music while the vocals are mostly done in a growling direction which is also heavily influenced by hardcore along with some clean singing also being utilized at times as well as the music also adding in a great amount of progressive structures and when the music speeds up a small amount of blast beats can also be heard, as the album progresses clean playing and stringed instruments can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and one of the later songs is an instrumental.
On this recording The Ocean remains true to the atmospheric and progressive mixture of sludge metal and post hardcore from previous releases, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover abstract, philosophical, globalization and modern age themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from The Ocean and if you are a fan of this band, you should enjoy this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Cambrian II: Eternal Recurrence" "Silurian: Age of Sea Scorpions" and "Permian: The Great Dying". 8 out of 10.
