Mortuous are a band from San Jose, California that plays a brutal mixture of doom and death metal and this is a review of their 2018 album "Through Wilderness" which was released by Tankcrimes Records.
Classical guitars start off the album before going into a very fast and brutal direction which also introduces blast beats onto the recording while the vocals are mostly deep death metal growls along with a few screams as well as the slower sections of the songs bringing in a great amount of doom metal elements.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very dark and melodic style while the music also brings in a great amount of 90's influences but updating it for the more modern era along with the solos and leads bringing in more of an old school death metal style and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, all of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them and as the album progresses a brief use of spoken word parts and clean playing can also be heard and flutes and keyboards are added onto the closing track.
Mortuous plays a musical style that takes brutal death metal and mixes it with doom metal to create a sound of their own, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover philosophy, death and anti technology themes.
In my opinion Mortuous are a very great sounding brutal mixture of doom and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Bitterness" "Anguish And Insanity" and "Screaming Headless". 8/5 out of 10.
