Timeworm/Luminescent Wake/Disciplin Media/2014 CD Review

 

  Timeworn  are  a  band  from  Norway  that  plays  a  mixture  of  post  hardcore,  sludge,  metal  and  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Luminescent  Wake"  which  was  released  by  Disciplin  Media.

 A  very  dark  sound  with  clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  and  after  a  couple  of  minutes  the  music  goes  into  a  heavier  direction  along  with  some  aggressive  vocals  and  growls  that  bring  in  a  death  metal  influence  to  the  bands  musical  style  and  the melodies  and  guitar  leads  the  band  uses  bring  in  a  post  hardcore  feeling  to  the  recording.

  The  guitar  riffing  can  be  very  melodic  at  times  while  the  heavier  parts  bring  in  a  heavy  sludge  and  doom  metal  influence  and  after  awhile  there  is  a  good  mixture  of  both  clean  and  heavy  parts  being  present  throughout  the  recording  and  on  the  later  tracks  the  music  starts  to  speed  up  at  times and  brings  in  more  of  an  aggressive  hardcore  punk  feeling.

  There  is  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  present  throughout  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  a  few  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  on  some  of  their  faster  material  you  can  hear  a  good  amount  of  d  beat  influences.

  Timeworn  plays  a  style  of  music  that  takes  the  heaviness  of  sludge  and  death  metal  and  mixes  it  in  with  the  darkness  and  melody  of  post  hardcore  and  the  energy  of  punk  rock  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  occult  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Timeworn  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  sludge  metal,  post  hardcore  and  punk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  Fire  Warning"  "Shokoti"  "The  oncoming  End"  and  "Cellular  Dissidence".  8  out  of  10.  




  

Gangrened/We Are Nothing/Bad Road Records/2014 EP Review

  Gangrened  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  very  heavy  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  ep  "We  Are  Nothing"  which  was  released  by  Bad  Road  Records.

  A  very  distorted  reverb  sound  starts  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  very  slow,  dark  and  heavy  sludge/doom  metal  sound  and  after  a  minute  screams  and  growls  are  added  into  the  music  and  after  awhile  melodic  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Some  of  the  solos  and  leads  bring  in  elements  of  post  metal  and  noise  rock  and  on  the  second  track  spoken  word  samples  are  brought  into  the beginning  of  the  track  before  the  music  makes  a  return  back  to  a  slow  and  heavy  doom  metal  direction  and  the  riffing  also  starts  incorporating  more  melody  along  with  some  elements  of  crust  and  on  the  last  track  the  bass  guitars  bring  in  a  very  powerful  sound.

  Gangrened  plays  a  form  of  doom/sludge  metal  that  is  very  heavy  and  always  remains  true  to  a  very  slow or  mid  paced  direction,  the  production  sound s very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  real  life  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Gangrened  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  doom  and  sludge  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Them".  8  out  of  10.

     

Crimson Blue/The Angelic Performance/My Kingdom Music/2014 CD Review

 

  Crimson  Blue  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  plays  a  mixture  of  gothic,  nu  metal  and  art  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "The  Angelic  Performance"  which  will  be  released  on  November  17th  by  My  Kingdom  Music.

  Radio  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  war  samples  and  spoken  word  parts  which  also leads  up  to  some  depressive  sounding  keyboards  being  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  operatic  female  vocals  and  then  the  music  starts  going  into  a  heavier  direction  that also  utilizes  some  black  and  death  metal  vocals  in  the  background  at  times.

  Melodic  guitar  riffing  can  be  heard  throughout  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  you  can  also  hear  some  of  the  modern  prog  metal  style  in  the  songs  at  times  while  the  other  tracks  also  show  influences  of  nu  metal  and  electronic  music  along  with  a  more  modern  take  on  goth  metal.

  Acoustic  guitars  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  a  couple  of  ballads  which  also  bring  in  elements  of  art  rock  and  one  of  the  later  songs  is  a  9  minute  long  and  epic  in  length  track  that  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  djent  influences  and  the  bass  guitars  on  the  recording  are  heavily  influenced  by  funk  music  and  when  leads  and  solos  are  used  they  add  in  even  more  melody  to  the  recording  and  they  close  the  album  with  an  1  minute  track.

  Crimson  Blue  plays  a  very  modern  sounding  form  of  gothic  metal  that  also  brings  in  elements  of  nu  metal  and  art  rock  as  well  as  a  small  touch  of  black  and  death  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes  along  with  a  touch  of  Norse  Mythology.

  In  my  opinion  Crimson  Blue  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  gothic,  nu  metal  and  art  rock  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Dolores"  "Mechanical  Madonna"  "Lab  II  Yggdrasil"  and  "Black  Wings".  8  out  of  10.

 

Voices Of Destiny/Crisis Cult/Massacre Records/2014 CD Review

  Voices  Of  Destiny  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a   symphonic  form  of  gothic  metal  with  elements of black,  doom  and  death  metla  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Crisis  Cult"  which  was  released  by  Massacre  Records.

  Dark  and  quiet  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  and  start  to  get  more  louder  each  second  as  well  as  adding  in  some  symphonic  and  classical  elements  which  also  gives  the  recording  a  very  epic  feeling  and  after  the  intro  the  music  starts  going  for  more  of  a  heavy  symphonic  metal  sound  along  with  some  melodic  clean  singing  female  vocals.

  When  male  vocals  are  added  into t he  music they  are  growls  and  screams  in  the  black  and  death  metal  vein  and  you  can  also  hear  choirs  in  the  music  at  times  as  well  as  the  heavier  parts  incorporating  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  you  can  also  hear  some  of  the  modern  prog  metal  sound  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  As  the  album  progresses  more  gothic  and  electronic  music  elements  are  added  into  some  of  the  tracks  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  there  are  small  amounts  of  spoken  word  parts  being  utilized  at  times  and  they  also  bring  in  a  power  ballad  before  making  a  return  back  to  a  heavier  direction  on  the  following  tracks  along  with  the  synths  also  bringing  in  elements  of  progressive  rock  and  they  close  the  album  with  2  bonus  tracks  with  the  last  one  being  all  pianos  and  vocals

  Voices  Of  Destiny  creates  another  symphonic,  gothic  metal  album  that  still  combines  extreme  metal  with  operatic  vocals  and  they  also  add  in  more  prog  and  electronic  music  elements  this  time  around  to  create  a  sound  that  is  different  but  remaining  true  to  their  style,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Voices Of  Destiny  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Wolfpack"  "To  The  Slaughter"  "Stormcrow"  and  "The  Great  hunt".  8  out  of  10.

Consecration/Ephemerality/UKEM Records/2014 CD Review

  Consecration  are  a  band  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  plays  a  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  this is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Ephemerality"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  UKEM  Records.

  A  very  dark,  distorted  and  heavy  doom  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodies  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  music  starts  getting  even  more  heavier  after  a  few  seconds  as  well  as  adding  in  deep  death  metal  growls  and  screams  and  after  awhile  clean  playing  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  and  heavy  sound  to  them.

  Most  of  the  songs  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  bring  in  more  of  a  melodic  doom  metal  sound  while  the  rhythms  remain  in  a  very  heavy  and  brutal  direction  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  music  starts  to  get  more  fast  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times  while  the  main  focus  remains  on  a  slow  and  heavy  doom/death  metal  sound.  

  Consecration  plays  a  style  of  doom/death  metal  that  is  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  style  of  the  genre  and  they  also  bring  in  a  very  dark  and  evil  atmosphere  to  their  heavy  sound,  the  production  sounds  very  dark,  heavy  and  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  despair,  darkness  and  occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Consecration  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "In  Decayed  Embrace"  "The  Summoning  Of  Sufferance"  and  "Thy  Requiem  Lament".  8  out  of  10.

     

Arkadia/Unrelenting/Inverse Records/2014 CD Review

  Arkadia  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  melodic  mixture  of  heavy,  death  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Unrelenting"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Inverse  Records.

  Melodic  guitar  leads  and  symphonic  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  musical  direction  and  adding  in  a  mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  clean  singing  vocals  which  seem  to  be  equally  influenced  by  both  gothic  and  power  metal  and  you  can  hear  quite  a  bit  of  doom/death  in  the  bands  musical  style.

  You  can  hear  a  lot  of  thrash  and  traditional  metal  elements  in  the  bands  musical  style  and  all  of  the  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  they  mix  in  with  the  heavier  parts  and  most  of  the  music  sticks  to  a  slow  or  mid  paced  direction  along  with  a  couple  of  tracks  that  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  on  the  last  song  there  is  a  brief  use  of  blast  beats  being  utilized  along  with  some  black  metal  influenced  vocals.

  Arkadia  plays  a  very  heavy  and  melodic  style  of  metal  that  is  heavily  influenced  by  the  death,  doom  and  gothic  metal  genres  of t he  90's  which  they  also  mix  in  with  the  melody  of  NWOBHM  to  create  a  dark,  melancholic  and  melodic  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Arkadia  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic  mixture  of  death,  doom  and  heavy  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Before  the  Dawn"  "May"  "Nothing  lasts  Forever"  and  "Unrelenting".  8  out  of  10.



    

Standing On The Floor Of Bodies/Sacrilegious & Culturally Deficient/7 Degrees Records/2012 12 Inch Review

   Standing  On  The  Floor  Of  Bodies  are  a  band  from  San  Francisco,  California  that  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge,  grindcore,  noise  and  brutal  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "Sacrilegious & Culturally Deficient"  which  was  released  by  7  Degrees  Records.

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  fast  and  brutal  direction  along  with  blast  beats,  growls  and  screams  and  the  band  also  brings  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  with  the  exception  of  the  last  track  most  of  the  songs  are  very  short  in  length  with  the  average  being  40  to  90  seconds.

  As  the  album  progresses  you  can  hear  elements  of  punk  rock  and  crustcore  in  the  bands  musical  sound  and  the  music  also  alternates  between  brutal  grindcore  and  slow  sludge  material  and  they  also  bring  in  a  few  spoken  word  samples  on  a  couple  of  the  tracks  as  well  as  adding  in  digital  sounds  at  times.  

   Standing  On  The  Floor  Of  Bodies  plays  a  very  brutal  style  of  grindcore  that  they  also  mix  in  with  elements  of  death  metal,  noise  and  sludge  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  apocalyptic  horror  themes.

  In  my  opinion   Standing  On  The  Floor  Of  Bodies  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  sludge,  grindcore,  noise  and  brutal  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Blaming  The  Creation"  "Officeworker"  "Still  Another  Cloven  Hoof"  and  "Eve  Was  Weak".  8  out  of  10.
